Domesday Book, 1086

The Domesday Book is probably the earliest record you will look at during your research. The Domesday Book was completed in 1086 after William the Conqueror ordered a survey of all landholdings and livestock in England so he could impose a tax. Most of the country except a few northern areas was covered, although the records for London and Winchester have not survived. Although very few buildings are specifically named, it includes such exciting details as how many mills and fisheries; wood, meadow and pasture; slaves, serfs and cattle there were and how much the whole area was worth in 1066 and 1086. For Naseby in Northamptonshire, for example, it reveals that Naseby Manor had been held by Gytha, the wife of Ralph, the Earl of Hereford (Edward the Confessor’s nephew) before the Conquest. The manor then passed to William Peverel, the sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire:

William [Peverel] also holds 7 hides in Naseby Navesberie. Land for 14 ploughs. In Lordship 2.8 villagers with priest, 2 Freemen and 11 smallholders have 3 ploughs. Meadow, 8 acres. The value was 20s; now 60s.
